The Judiciary Committee will be reviewing “The Milk Bill” HSB 585 as soon as Thursday. Below is my letter to the committee members. For those of you who support the fundamental right of consumer choice, this is a huge step in the right direction. I urge all of you to contact the committee members and make your voice heard. I can forward you the list of emails if you need.
Dear Judiciary Committee Members,
I am writing you today to urge you to legalize the farm-consumer sale of raw milk in Iowa. I strongly believe that consumer choice is a fundamental right.
As an life-long Iowan and a mother of five, I am convicted in both my heritage and my decade of education in nutrition. I have been following the struggle to legalize raw milk in America through the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund. I’ve also read the media coverage on the issue. The fact of the matter is, that you have as much right to tell me that I cannot purchase raw milk as I have the right to tell you that you cannot eat at McDonalds. It is an individual consumer right to choose what foods we purchase, from whom we purchase them and how we prepare and serve them to our families. I feel that I can confidently say that raw milk consumers are not uneducated people. These people know the ‘health risks’ involved. It is ludicrous to think that millions of American tax dollars are being spent conducting raids on raw milk farms while fully endorsing establishments that blatantly contribute to millions of deaths a year (i.e. fast food industry). The question has to be raised, what is all the fuss about?
Americans have been fed mis-information about food products since the birth of convenience foods. Profitability also seems to rule the roost. There is little regard for the rights of the American consumer. The fact of the matter is, westernized diet is killing Americans at an alarming rate. Consumers have the right to make the choice for themselves. For those committee member’s that may not be aware, the American government’s own data supports that raw milk is healthy.
“Research by Dr. Ted Beals, MD, featured in the summer 2011 issue of Wise Traditions, the quarterly journal of the Weston A. Price Foundation, shows that you are about 35,000 times more likely to get sick from other foods than you are from raw milk! Statistically, you’re also more likely to get injured driving to the farm to pick up your raw milk than becoming ill from drinking it. Dr. Beals’ research shows that between 1999 and 2010, there was an average of 42 cases of illness per year attributed to raw milk, and that includes both “confirmed” and “presumed” cases.”
Forty-two cases of illness per year, forty-two. That is not fatalities ladies and gentlemen, just illnesses. The CDC itself estimates (on their website) that roughly 1:6 Americans (or 48 million Americans) become sick from foodborne illnesses. Of that 128,000 are hospitalized and 3.000 die. Yet 42 cases per year justifies legal ramifications? Are these same ramifications going to be imposed on all USDA approved foods that cause illness and death?
The issue at hand, ladies and gentlemen, is not whether you yourself will choose to consume raw milk. It is whether or not you believe in the fundamental right for Iowans to make that choice for themselves. Again, I deeply urge you to legalize farm-consumer sale of raw milk in Iowa. I hope that you partner with Iowans to restore the right of consumer choice.
